De Toren Fusion V 2003 voted best red wine at
Winex.
For an unprecedented second year, De
Toren's Fusion V has been voted the best red
wine on show at both the RMB WineX consumer
wine show held recently in Johannesburg and
Cape Town.
De Toren achieved this recognition with their
2001 Fusion V at the inaugural event in
2003, and now again in 2005 with the
stunning 2003 Fusion V blend. The 2002
vintage was voted best red wine at WineX
Cape Town in 2004 making it three in row for
the Cape event, and twice nationally.
Over 3000 individuals voted this year!

RELEASED! - DDS Shiraz 2003 |
|
There has been widespread
interest in our unique new DDS Shiraz produced
in equal partnership between ourselves and the
prestige Burgundian Domain Bertagna. In a first
of its kind, the wine was a collaborative effort
between Domaine Bertagna's winemaker,
Claire Forrestier, and Albie Koch - De Toren's
winemaker.
Working together from the start, they sourced
the grapes from top Cape sites and
managed to obtain barrels directly from
Bertagne's exclusive stock, as well as a
second-fill supply imported from the Hospice de
Beaune. In all, only 350 cases of the wine were
produced in what is considered one of the
greatest Cape vintages of recent times.
A limited amount been made
available to the local market, and any enquiries
should be directed to De Toren.

RELEASED! - FUSION V 2003 PREMIUM BORDEAUX BLEND |

Now Available!-Fusion V Vintage 2003
premium Bordeaux blend.
No sooner had we produced our maiden vintage
1999 De Toren Fusion V blend, then along came
respected US wine guru Robert Parker, and
slapped an as then unheard of, 90 points for a
maiden vintage on this wine. The rest is
history, and a brief one at that. The dictates
of supply and demand took over and we were, and
still are, hard pressed to cater for the global
demand for this wine from our boutique private
Cellar.
This is a wine that can more that hold it's own
against all comers, as was recently verified by
a select group of Germany's top sommeliers.
Fusion V was included in a blind tasting line up
of Bordeaux 's best. Not once was Fusion
V chosen as a new world wine, and in most
sessions Fusion V was adjudged the best wine in
the line up. Interestingly, the price of Fusion
V was at least one third of the cheapest
Bordeaux.
Fusion V 2003
Deep, dark purple with blue rim. Immediate impression of fine style and
harmony. Full range of aromas from floral, red
berry and oak to fresh earth, dry herb, and
sweet spice. Well-rounded mouth with full body
and massive impact of fruit and spice. Great
balance with fine elegance. Chewy but ripe
tannins and massive, long finish. Will offer
additional reward with careful cellaring.
As earlier mentioned in this newsletter,
consumers and wine judges alike tend to concur
that this is a great wine as recently t his
vintage – 2003, was also adjudged as the best
wine in its class at the International Wine and
Spirits Challenge in London.
Only 500 cases will be released in the South African market.

SECRETS OF OUR SUCCESS: Part 9 : Single Berry
Sorting
|
Not only do we source our grapes from top sites
How much closer to perfection? We are already bringing
down our crop loads dramatically, we remove all bunches
from underdeveloped shoots, We remove all uncoloured
grapes at 80% verraison (when grapes change colour). We
hand harvest. We then inspect each bunch on our sorting
table to look for any imperfection!
Now we have gone a couple of steps further! We have
installed a vibrating sorting table where "single
berries" are sorted. After sorting bunches on the
"triage" conveyor the bunches are transported to
de-stemmer for de stemming. After de- stemming the
grapes are dropped onto a vibrating sorting table that
spreads the single berries for single berry sorting.
Here we look for undeveloped and overripe berries and we
also remove all bits of stems that might come through.
Just another small bit of attention to detail to get
only the very best into the bottle!

1/2 stars by the influential John Platter wine guide.
The wine is tasted by a different Platter panel member
every year. This year the panel member was the well
known wine critic Angela Lloyd. Consistency in quality
is the key to an successful brand.
