2009 VINTAGES RELEASED

Date Issued: 26 October 2011

DE TOREN is a unique boutique 25 hectare winery that lies on the sun-drenched Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, overlooking False Bay. The estate huddles closely to the ocean, which explains why the five classic cultivars from Bordeaux – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot thrive in these vineyards.

The first impression of DE TOREN is somewhat uneventful, but closer inspection reveals the strict man-imposed order underlying nature’s extravagance. Minute attention to the finest detail is evident, from the immaculate vineyards to the cellar’s tower. This tower gives DE TOREN its distinctive silhouette, but also ensures that its wine is made with gentle gravity and never has to experience the torture of harsh mechanical pumps. The respect to nature and attention to detail forms the inextricable core of DE TOREN’s philosophy and success.

The maiden vintage of DE TOREN 1999 Fusion V received a gold medal from the IWSC competition and was awarded 90 points by both Parker and Wine Spectator. Since then the complexity has grown from strength to strength. The Merlot dominated DE TOREN Z was launched in 2004 and the latest rating for the 2008 vintage reached 92 points in Wine Enthusiast.

The visionaries of this special winery is Emil and Sonette den Dulk and believe the farm invites you to indulge in every one of the five sensory delights – sight, sound, touch, aroma and especially taste. They entered the wine industry not to become a mere competitor in the market, but to create a demand for something exceptional!

DE TOREN’s small but much focussed team is made up of the winemaker and director, Albie Koch and his right hand man, Charles Williams. In the vineyards you will find Ernest Manuel, the viticulturist looking after the babies in the ground and attending to all their needs. The specialized process of mastering the art of creating a unique wine is not taken lightly and from planting to finally presenting the bottle to an appreciative consumer, is painstakingly planned and managed.

The 2009 vintage was hailed as the vintage of the Decade. At DE TOREN this vintage certainly did not disappoint! For the first time the accolades are running in prior to the release date.

The DE TOREN Z 2009 this year boasts – Merlot 56% / Cabernet Sauvignon 24% / Cabernet Franc 14% / Malbec 4% / Petit Verdot 2% …and displays alcohol at 14,5%.

Our DE TOREN Fusion V 2009 contains – Cabernet Sauvignon 60% / Cabernet Franc 12% / Malbec 11% / Merlot 10% / Petit Verdot 7%…the really ripe fruit resulted in a real block buster.

Even better news is that with such a great vintage we managed to produce 400 cases more than usual!

Both these wines were again placed in the top 10 Red Wines in the country by the voting consumers at Winex Show in Johannesburg.

DE TOREN Private Cellar also received the most votes from the public as “Best Wines on the Show”

GREAT RESULTS AT THE 37TH NEDERBURG WINE AUCTION

A new record price for a South African wine, a steep increase in prices and great international interest in SA rare wines marked the 37th Nederburg Wine Auction, held in Paarl on 16 and 17 September 2011.

DE TOREN entered a very rare collection of a 6 pack of the first 6 vintages of Fusion V. In the pack contained 1 bottle each of our maiden vintage 1999 followed by all the releases until the year 2004.

Bidding was very brisk and the hammer was finally struck for the first lot at R9 200.00 for 6 bottles. This equates to R 1 533.00 per bottle. The average sales price for all the wine on offer was R1 417.00 per bottle.

The great news, over and above the all time record price for our wines, was that we sold exactly the same pack to the first 50 of our customers on our database for R599.00 per bottle just 9 months ago. This translates into nearly 300% return in less than 12 months!!

The pricing achieved by our wines outperformed all wines on auction except for the rare ports and old Zonnebloem wines dating from 1948 to 1981.
